The National Youth Chess Championship 2017/18 - Special Notice

The National Youth Chess Championship 2017/18

This is to inform you all that all arrangements are made to conduct the above event at DS Senanayake College from 27th to 30th December 2017 by the CFSL Team. They are doing a lot of home work for smooth running of the event. This is a huge event with the registration of 2,500 players. So, we cannot run such an event without your support. I kindly request from players, Parents, Coachers and accompanying persons to follow the below instructions as a support for us to have a better Chess Event.

1. Start of the event
Under 11, 13, 15 and 17 (Both Boys and Girls) Should report to the respective Sector Arbiter at 8.00 a.m. on 27th.
Under 7 and 9 (Both Boys and Girls) Should report to the respective Sector Arbiter at 9.00 a.m. on 27th.

2. Late Entries
We have not accommodating late Entries for the 1st round for any reason. We have removed the names even which has come through our organizers which we knew those are late. So, don't come and bother the arbiters on late entries because the decision has taken by me and they are not in a position to get a decision without me.
The late entries will be accommodated from 2nd round if any player wish.

3. Accompanying Persons
We request only one accompanying person to come with a child. If the security or an organizer sees more accompanying persons for a single players, they will not allow you to come to the school. If they see two in inside the school, they will ask one to go out. Please adhere to there decision without making any trouble for your player.

4. Parents inside playing venue
Only the parents of under 7 and 9 players parents are allowed to go to the playing rooms to find the relevant table for their players. Please go in make the player sit on the relevant table and come out. Anyway, the arbiters are checking the pairing with the players seated and don't worry about sitting the players are in wrong boards.

5. Chess Equipment
All players should bring their own Chess Boards and sets. A pen to score the game etc. Both players are requested to confirm their results wen the arbiter is entering the result.

6. Arbiters
The following International Arbiters will be in action:
Mr. Thiwanka Tissera, Mr. Erosh Jayasinghe, Mr. Pradeep Matharaarachchi, Mr. Werochana Perera, and Mrs. Buddhi Panagoda.
I will publish the sector arbiters list later.

7. Regulations
Do not know the rules and regulations or being a small child is not a reason for not penalizing for a dispute. So, be informed to report any incident to the arbiter at the moment it happened. Making one move after any incident will result in not allowing a right to claim.

It is highly prohibited talking among players while playing. Arbiters will be very strict on this. Any communication items including smart watches are not allowed in playing rooms. If found the relevant player will lose the game immediately. (But, we will not check bags or pockets.) ringing a bell also make the game loose.

8. Parents
This is to inform the parents that it is not our duty to provide facilities for you. As to the schools, they are not allowing parents in side the school in all other examinations or programmes. So, since we are pressing that they allow us to get you in.

But, we have ordered chairs for your convenience. I kindly request you to support us to keep you all inside in future events as well. Don't keep the chairs or walk on the greens or where some flowers or cultivation is there. Behave inside considering it is a school. I have noticed several times specially the ladies are keeping legs on chairs etc.

9. Garbedge
As you know, litter is the biggest problem in Colombo. So, it is recommended that all of you may go out of the school for the lunch. If you bring the lunch, please bring back the lunch remaining with you back. This is also a great support to keep the parents inside in future events. If you eat in a classroom please clean the place when you finish.

10. Selection for National Chess Teams

According to the National selection criteria, The Sri Lanka National Chess Team players are selected for official as well as other places in the Youth teams irrespective of the result of this tournament until the next year Nationals. 3rd Negambo Chess Festival 2017

3rd Negambo Chess Festival 2017
Organized by
FMTJ Global Chess Club
Venue :
Town Hall, Negambo, Sri Lanka.
Start : 20th August 2017
End  :  24th August 2017
Category : International Open Rated Tournament
Dear chess lovers,
The time has come for the 3rd Negombo Chess Festival (NCF) 2017!!!
After the statistical analysis of NCFs and other local rated events, we found that the local rated events will be overflow of 1000-1200 category!, less 2000+ players!!
That is why we increased rating categories;
unrated, 1000-1100, 1100-1200, 1200-1400, 1400-1600, 1600-1800 and 1800-2000 (7 rating categories).
We offer 5000/- and return the entry fee 1000/- for 2000+ local rated players after completing the event(all rounds). We respect our top 2000+ players and we know their effort and time is invaluable. This is just a beginning and we hope the offer will be increased in future.
Our senior chess players will be attracted by 50+ category and this initiative will increase the quantity of Annual Senior Citizens Event.
It is our responsibility to give opportunity for vision impaired SL players to expose to local rated events, to expect more performance of them in the international events. It is a challenge to provide their requirements as set by FIDE. We hope this start will be continued with improvements in future events.
1st time in open rated events we introduce 2 team places. 1st one is Mercantile. The players can represent any cooperate sector organization(CSO) under their approval. For this we consider ONLY private sector organizations (NOT government services). Our objective on this is private sector will sponsor the players to build their brand in Chess. The 3 trophies we distribute are belongs to the representing organizations. Minimum 3 players should participate from a CSO and we consider top 5 players of each CSO to find the best 3.
Same way, we deliver 3 trophies for Higher Education Sector and our objective of this is to provide an oppertunity for University students to prepare for the university games in addition to increase 18+ players for NCF 2017.
No medals other than Gold, Silver and Bronze as Sri Lanka Chess approves. 40 gifts for Kids Under 6,7 to motivate them as this is the 1st rated event of most of them.
1st NCF – ~220 participants, 2nd NCF ~350 participants, 3rd NCF we expect ~400 participants. We are happy if we get the participants such that the unrated players get, their rated opponents’ average rating above 1200 (to open the rating).
Be witnesses for a quality event!
Be with diversified chess segments!!
cheers.

Important advice from WGM Susan Polgar for Players, Coaches and also Parents

Chess Improvement Advice

Every day, I receive dozens (and sometimes in the hundreds) of questions from players, parents, and even coaches asking for chess improvement advice. Obviously it is impossible for me to answer all the questions. However, sometimes when I run into really good questions, I will address my answers in various posts so everyone can benefit from it.
Question (from a German IM): Can you explain the transition from IMs to GMs? What is needed to make this move to GM?
This is a very good question and it is very often asked. I will address it more broadly as the process is the same to go from a club player to master, master to FIDE master, FIDE master to IM, IM to GM, and even GM to super GM and World Champion.
The reason why SPICE (Susan Polgar Institute for Chess Excellence) is one of the most successful chess programs in history is the process we use. Unlike many others, I do not have a one size fits all training method for more serious players. There is no such thing as one size fits all chess ability. So why would we have the same training system for everyone at higher levels? Every player is unique like our DNAs.
When I accept a new student, there will be at least 1 one on one meeting to start out with. In that meeting, each student must give me his / her absolutely objective assessment of strengths and weaknesses. I will then offer my evaluation and the third assessment will come from the chief strategist of SPICE. It will be wonderful if all three of us will come to the same conclusion. It most cases, there will be differences. We will then discuss it and come up with a general consensus. After that, we will come up with a training program specifically for that student.
The improvement process
There is no perfect player in the world, not Magnus Carlsen, Garry Kasparov, Bobby Fischer, Anatoly Karpov, not anyone. Everyone has weaknesses. Some are just better in hiding their weaknesses.
Therefore, knowing that, one has to understand what it takes to win or draw, and not lose. Each chess game has many phases which may or may not contribute to the results we want: Opening, middlegame, endgame, tactic, mental toughness, physical fitness, nerves, and many other tangibles.
So the situation is simple. If a player is 2400, he/she is not as good as others who are 2500 or 2600 and above. This is simply a fact. The next question will be are the players objective enough to understand their true weaknesses? One of the big reasons why many do not improve is they fail to be objective about themselves, or worse, not care about it.
If you look through the chess database, you can see countless weaker players losing to stronger players in absolutely equal positions (sometimes even slightly better) because they lack something. Perhaps it is deficiencies in understanding the positions, weakness in tactic, bad nerves, bad endgame knowledge, etc. Any player can review their own games to spot these weaknesses. Then focus on fixing these problems ASAP. Study random materials or random phases of the game will help very little. Many are just so fixated with openings and they neglect all other parts of the game.
Another problem I see quite often is “CDS”, Chess Delusional Syndrome. Too many people are delusional with their chess ability. They think they are stronger than they actually are, or they think that they are training hard enough. They simply cannot be objective with their own assessment. Flattering yourself with false analysis will only make you feel good about yourself momentarily until someone kick you in the rear during a game.
“CDS” is quite common with parents and / or family members. Many of them do not like coaches who will tell them the truth. They want coaches who will tell them what they want to hear about their children. That is something we would never do at SPICE. We have to be 100% honest and objective about our assessments and advices. We are not here to please players or their families. We are here to build champions, on and off the chess board, by teaching them the right things and helping them fix their weaknesses.
